Choosing the right cane consists of the following three major components:
HEIGHT - Length of cane should be at a height where your elbow is slightly bent when using. If elbow is almost at a 90 degree angle, then the length is too long and if not bent at all, the length is too short. An important factor to always consider is that you can shorten the cane to your desirable length but it will be impossible to lengthen.
WEIGHT - Our one piece crook handle canes will support weight up to 250 pounds. All two piece canes with metal band connectors are designed for style and are not meant to be weight bearing canes. They should be used as walking aids. Our Hercules series offers canes that will support up to 500 pounds
LEVEL OF SUPPORT - Most of our canes are designed for individuals requiring minimal to moderate assistance for extra balance on one leg. If you have permanent or long term injuries or impairments, you may want to consult with your medical professional in making sure you have the right cane necessary for your specific need.
Turn the cane upside down On the side opposite the injury, place the cane against your hip. With a slight bend in your elbow, mark the cane where it meets your wrist bone.
Cut cane at that height and replace the tip.
Patient should consult doctor or therapist for proper walking gait.
Yes. Free of charge. Most canes can be cut to your length. Simply select the length option of the cane before adding the item to your cart. If there is no length selection available just let us know the length you desire in the comment box at check-out.
You should hold the cane opposite of the leg that needs support. You would take a step forward with the leg that needs support and the cane at the same time, then while balancing your weight with the leg that needs support and the cane, take another step forward with the leg that does not need support. If no support is really necessary and you just want the cane for balancing, then holding the cane on either side if fine, whichever you prefer and feel most comfortable with but use the same method of walking as described above.
